Abbotsbury Swannery is the world’s only managed colony of nesting mute swans.

The Swannery was established by Benedictine Monks who built a monastery at Abbotsbury during the 1040′s. The monks farmed the swans to produce food for their lavish Dorset banquets. St Peter’s monastery was destroyed in 1539 during the dissolution. Some of the ruins are still visible around St Nicholas’ Church in the village. Since that time the Swannery has been under the stewardship of the Ilchester Estates.

This is the only place in the world where you are able to walk through the heart of a colony of nesting Mute Swans. A visit to the Swannery is considered one of the best things to do in Dorset.

Children visiting Abbotsbury attractions must be accompanied by a paying adult.

We cannot accept Tesco Clubcard vouchers on this website. These have to be redeemed on the walk-up rate tickets purchased at the entrance.

As a disablle visitor ut was a long walk down from the road off the bus. I was extremely grateful for the transport from the shop to the swans and back up to the bus stop. They said the pub will ring for you to be collected too but the bus driver did not pass this information so we did not know. The swannery staff were apologetic about this and put themselves out to make amends. A very special place with caring people.
